Do I need to seal my countertops?

This question arises the most frequently in this industry, and typically you’ll get a different answer from each individual. Some stones may need to be sealed and some may not, but what I always recommend is the age old saying of it’s “better to be safe than sorry”.

A huge deciding factor is what kind of stone you have installed in your kitchen. Generally anything natural will 100% percent need to be sealed with an impregnating sealer, this includes any type of Granite, Marble, Travertine, Quartzite, Slate, Concrete, Labrodorite, Etc.… with the exception to Soapstone (you simply use a mineral oil).

What does not need to be sealed?

Man-made Quartz & acrylic do not need to be sealed in most cases. These products are advertised as being stain resistant and not needing to be sealed. The exception that I have found is that a honed or sued quartz performs better when putting a Nano Sealer on it, and also some quartz may be inferior in quality and can be improved by sealing it on occasion.

Why should I seal ?

I cannot stress the importance of this enough! You may feel that your granite is dark or will not stain or show stains, but this can be the least of your worries. At one point the Grand Canyon was not how it was, over time Water has made it what it is and changed it. Water and especially the minerals in hard water can damage your precious granite over time. On top of that moisture can cause further damage to your counters by causing your plywood to swell or even worse the steel rod support to rust and cause cracking. This is why you see so many cracks around the sink areas of granite.
